Tina was born on November 26, 1939, in Tennessee, and died on May 24, 2023, in Switzerland. She found success in the rhythm-and-blues, soul, and rock genres in a career that spanned five decades.

We will travel with Tina Turner from her early days growing up in rural Nutbush, Tennessee, to her early night club performances in St. Louis and her meeting Ike Turner and the formation of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Our journey will continue with her early hits with Ike Turner, including “River Deep, Mountain High” and “Proud Mary,” into her career resurgence and superstardom including such classic recordings as “What’s Love Got to Do with It” and “Private Dancer.” Tina Turner was inducted with Ike as a

Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity: An Author Talk with Kim Scott

Why is feedback so difficult, and how can we make it easier? The idea is simple: You don't have to choose between being a pushover and a jerk. Kim Scott, "New York Times" bestselling author of "Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity", will explain the Radical Candor feedback framework and how you can practice it today. She'll offer practical, tactical tips for how to solicit criticism, give praise and criticism, gauge how what you're saying is landing, and build a culture of Radical Candor. She'll also discuss ensuring that bias, prejudice, and bullying don't masquerade as feedback.

The Lunch Counter Sit-In Movement of 1960
Presented by Professor Christopher Schmidt
Wednesday, February 28
7:00pm - 8:00pm

An act of nonviolent protest against a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, that began on February 1, 1960, led the way to a wider sit-in movement that spread throughout the South.

Professor Christopher Schmidt will discuss his book, "The Sit-Ins, Protest and Legal Change in the Civil Rights Era", which tells the story of the 1960 student lunch counter protests and the national debate they sparked over the meaning of the constitutional right of all Americans to equal protection of the law. He will describe how, on February 1, 1960, four Black college students in Greensboro, North Carolina, decided to engage in a sit-in protest at a Woolworth's, and how this courageous act sparked a protest movement against racial discrimination in public accommodations that swept across the South. He will situate this iconic moment of the civil rights movement into the continuing history of struggles for equal access to public accommodations.

Presenter: Christopher W. Schmidt is a Professor and Co-Director of the Institute on the Supreme Court of the United States at Chicago-Kent College of Law. He is also a Research Professor at the American Bar Foundation and the Editor of "Law & Social
Inquiry".

"Flight Paths"
Presented by Author: Rebecca Heisman
Thursday, February 29
7:00pm - 8:00pm
Add to Calendar

The fascinating story of how scientists solved the great mystery of bird migration, "Flight Paths" is an unprecedented look into exciting, behind-the-scenes moments of groundbreaking discovery.

We've all heard amazing facts about bird migration—the long distances that birds travel, the ways that they navigate, etc. But did you ever wonder how we figured all of this out? While working for the American Ornithological Society, Rebecca Heisman became fascinated with the varied and creative techniques that scientists have used to study bird migration, and this eventually became the basis for her book "Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration". In her talk, she'll share some surprising stories from the history of bird migration research and discuss why understanding migration is so crucial for bird conservation.
